The preview locks so you can create a free account to save your work. Your setup is preserved so nothing is lost.

How does single elimination work?

Every team plays until they lose. One loss and they are out. The last team standing wins. It is the fastest format and best for one day events.

Does the generator handle byes and odd team counts in single elimination?

Yes. If you have 5, 6, or 7 teams the generator automatically adds byes in the first round so your bracket stays balanced.

Can I include a 3rd place playoff in single elimination?

Yes. Toggle 3rd place on in the setup and Waresport adds a bronze medal match between your two semifinal losers.

How many matches are in a single elimination bracket?

A single elimination bracket has N minus 1 matches where N is the number of teams. So 8 teams equals 7 matches, 16 teams equals 15 matches.

What is the difference between single elimination and double elimination?

Single elimination removes a team after one loss. Double elimination gives every team a second chance through a losers bracket before they are removed from the tournament.

How many matches are in a double elimination bracket?

Roughly 2 times N minus 1 or 2 times N matches depending on whether the grand final needs a reset. For 8 teams expect 14 to 15 matches.

When should I choose double elimination?

Choose double elimination when fairness matters more than speed. It is popular for esports, wrestling, and premium youth tournaments where teams travel long distances.

How does a round robin tournament work?

Every team plays every other team exactly once. Standings are decided by wins, points, or head to head. It is the fairest format because a single upset does not end anyone's tournament.

How many matches are in a round robin?

N times N minus 1 divided by 2. So 6 teams equals 15 matches, 8 teams equals 28 matches. Round robins take longer, plan your days accordingly.

Can I combine a round robin group stage with a knockout bracket?

Yes. Many clubs run round robin pools first, then take the top finishers into a single or double elimination knockout. Save the setup with a free account to unlock group stage plus bracket workflows.

Single elimination formula: total matches = teams − 1. Rounds = ⌈log₂(teams)⌉.

Double elimination formula: total matches = (teams × 2) − 2 (grand final reset may add 1 more).

Round robin formula: total matches = teams × (teams − 1) / 2. Each team plays teams − 1 games.

Byes: needed when team count is not a power of 2. Byes = next power of 2 − team count.

Glossary

Tournament bracket terms, defined

Plain-English definitions for the terms every tournament director should know.

Seed

A team's ranking going into the bracket. The #1 seed is placed opposite the lowest seed so top teams do not meet until later rounds.

Bye

A free pass to the next round given to a team when the total number of entries is not a power of 2. Higher seeds usually receive byes first.

Bracket

The visual diagram that shows every match, who plays who, and the path each team must take to reach the final.

Single elimination

A knockout format where a single loss removes a team from the tournament. Fastest to run, one clear winner.

Double elimination

A format with a winners bracket and a losers bracket. A team is only out after two losses. Standard for esports majors and many club nationals.

Round robin

A format where every team plays every other team once. Final standings are decided by total wins, points, or a tiebreaker system.

Group stage

A pool play format where teams are split into groups, play round robin inside the group, and the top finishers advance to a knockout playoff.

Swiss format

Teams with similar records play each other every round. No one is eliminated until they hit a set number of losses. Popular in chess and esports.

Consolation bracket

A secondary bracket for teams eliminated early. Guarantees every team a set number of games, common in youth tournaments.

3rd place playoff

An optional bronze medal match between the two teams that lose in the semifinals.

Grand final

The championship match in a single elimination bracket, or the final match between winners and losers bracket champions in double elimination.

Seeding

The process of assigning seeds and placing teams in the bracket. Common methods include ranked, snake, region-based, and random.
