QUICK ANSWER

What is a tryout evaluation form?

A structured scoring sheet coaches use to rate each athlete on the same criteria during tryouts — making cut decisions fair, defensible, and data-driven instead of gut-feel.

QUICK ANSWER

How many criteria should the form have?

5–8 criteria is the sweet spot. Fewer misses important skills; more makes live scoring too slow. This builder defaults to 7 sport-specific criteria per sport.

QUICK ANSWER

1–5 or 1–10 scale?

Use 1–5 for fast, high-volume tryouts. Use 1–10 when you have a deep athlete pool and need more separation between similar skill levels.

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

How to run a great tryout evaluation

A structured process turns a chaotic tryout day into a clean, defensible selection you can stand behind.

1

Build your form

Select your sport, customize criteria, set the scale, and print enough copies for every evaluator before tryout day.

2

Assign numbers

Give every athlete a numbered pinnie. Have evaluators score by number — not name — to reduce unconscious bias.

3

Score live

Score each athlete immediately after they perform each drill — not at the end. Memory fades fast in large tryouts.

4

Compare and decide

Average multi-evaluator scores, sort by total, make your roster selections, and notify athletes the same day if possible.

SCORING GUIDE

How to score athletes
consistently

Inconsistent scoring is the biggest problem in youth sports tryouts. Two evaluators watching the same athlete give wildly different scores because they're using different mental benchmarks. Fix this before tryout day.

Define what each score means before your evaluators pick up a form. A "3/5" should mean the same thing to every coach on your staff.

Define your anchors

Before tryouts: "A 5 means this athlete makes our A team starting lineup. A 3 means they'd be a solid roster player. A 1 means they're not at this level yet." Say it out loud to your staff.

Use the full scale

Most evaluators default to 3s and 4s. Push yourself to use 1s and 5s when an athlete clearly earns them — it creates the separation you need for close decisions.

Calibrate before the first athlete

Have evaluators score a video clip of last year's typical athlete together, then compare. This 10-minute calibration cuts scoring variance by more than any other method.

1–5 Scale Reference Card

Print and give to each evaluator

5

Elite

Best-in-class for this age group. Would start on most competitive programs in the region.

4

Above Average

Clearly better than the typical athlete at this level. Likely a starter on your roster.

3

Average

Meets the baseline standard. Solid roster player with room to develop.

2

Below Average

Below the standard for this level. Needs development before competing here.

1

Not Yet Ready

Significant gap between this athlete's current skill and the program's minimum standard.

COACHING TIPS

Common tryout evaluation mistakes

Most tryout complaints — from parents and athletes — trace back to a handful of avoidable process failures.

1

Scoring from memory at the end

Evaluators who score 20+ athletes at the end of the day compress memories and conflate athletes. Score in real time, drill by drill.

2

One evaluator makes all decisions

Single-evaluator tryouts are subjective and hard to defend. Use at least two coaches scoring independently, then average.

3

No standard criteria

Without a form, every coach measures different things. One fixates on athleticism, another on attitude. Pre-built forms force alignment.

4

Scoring by name instead of number

Knowing an athlete's name or reputation before scoring introduces bias. Evaluate by pinnie number — reveal the name after scores are locked.

5

No feedback to cut athletes

Athletes who are cut with no feedback often re-try without knowing what to improve. Brief written feedback from the form data builds trust and goodwill.

6

Delaying roster decisions by days

The longer you wait to notify athletes, the more anxiety — and the more calls from parents. Aim to release decisions the same evening as tryouts.

VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball Tryout Evaluation Form

A volleyball tryout evaluation form should score athletes on both technical skills and intangibles. Technical criteria vary by position — setters need different assessment than liberos — so many coaches add position notes to their forms.

Serving, passing, setting, attacking, and defense are core. Athleticism and coachability round out the picture. The free tool above pre-loads these seven criteria for volleyball — customize them for your program.

Recommended volleyball criteria:

Serving
Passing / Reception
Setting
Attacking
Defense / Digging
Athleticism
Coachability

SOFTBALL

Softball Tryout Evaluation Form

A softball tryout evaluation form covers hitting mechanics, fielding, arm strength, running speed, base running IQ, athleticism, and coachability. Some programs add position-specific sheets for pitchers and catchers.

Score each athlete on the same criteria so comparisons across a large tryout group stay fair and defensible when you make cut decisions.

Fielding
Throwing Arm
Running Speed
Base Running IQ
Athleticism
Coachability

BASEBALL

Baseball Tryout Evaluation Form

Baseball tryout forms typically cover the five tools: hitting for average, hitting for power, throwing velocity, fielding, and running speed. Coachability and baseball IQ round out a complete evaluation.

The free builder above pre-loads these criteria for baseball. Add a "Pitching Mechanics" criterion if you're evaluating pitchers, or "Blocking" for catchers.

BASKETBALL

Basketball Tryout Evaluation Form

A good basketball tryout evaluation form balances skills, athleticism, and intangibles. The most common mistake is putting too much weight on shooting and not enough on defense and coachability — the skills that actually win games.

Select Basketball in the tool above to load these criteria instantly. Customize for your age group — add "Passing" for point guard evaluations, or "Post Moves" for big men.

SOCCER

Tryout Evaluation Form — Soccer

Soccer tryout evaluation forms should assess technical skill, first touch, passing accuracy, shooting, speed, defensive effort, and coachability. Position-specific forms (goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, forward) let coaches evaluate athletes more precisely.

Technical Skill

Ball control, dribbling under pressure, first touch quality

Passing

Weight, accuracy, timing of passes in small-sided games

Shooting

Technique, placement, ability to shoot both feet

Speed / Athleticism

Acceleration, top-end speed, physical presence

Defensive Effort

Pressing, tracking runs, winning 50–50 balls

Coachability

Listens, adjusts, responds well to feedback

CHEER

Cheer Tryout Evaluation Form

Cheer tryout evaluation forms typically cover tumbling skills, stunting ability, jumps, dance technique, motions and vocals, appearance and presentation, and overall attitude. Many programs have athletes perform a prepared routine and score it section by section.

Select Cheer in the builder above to load preset criteria. Add "Partner Stunting," "Level Tumbling," or "Choreography" to match your program's specific evaluation structure.

Tryout evaluation by age group

What you evaluate — and how strictly — should change dramatically based on the age group. Here's how to adapt your form.

YOUTH · 8U–12U

Evaluate potential, not polish

At this age, technical skills are underdeveloped across the board. Focus your form on athleticism, motor learning speed, and coachability over current skill execution.

Prioritize in your form:

  • ✓Coordination and body control
  • ✓Athletic ability and speed
  • ✓Willingness to listen and try
  • ✓How quickly they apply coaching
  • ✕Don't over-weight current technique

INTERMEDIATE · 13U–16U

Balance skill and intangibles

Technical skills matter more now. Athletes should show foundational competence in sport-specific skills. Coachability and IQ remain crucial because players at this level are still in rapid development.

Prioritize in your form:

  • ✓Technical execution (equal weight)
  • ✓Sport IQ and decision-making
  • ✓Coachability and attitude
  • ✓Physical development trajectory
  • ✕Don't rely solely on current stats

ADVANCED · 17U+, HS, CLUB

Evaluate performance and ceiling

At this level, athletes should demonstrate consistent technical skills under pressure. Evaluate performance in competitive scenarios — scrimmages, live reps, game-speed drills — not just isolated skill stations.

Prioritize in your form:

  • ✓Competitive execution under pressure
  • ✓Position-specific advanced skills
  • ✓Leadership and composure
  • ✓Physical benchmarks (speed, strength)
  • ✓Game IQ and tactical awareness

Everything that needs to happen before the first athlete steps on the court or field.

BEFORE TRYOUT DAY

  • ✓Build and print evaluation forms — one per evaluator per session. Use this free tool.
  • ✓Confirm your drill sequence and match it to the form criteria order.
  • ✓Brief all evaluators on score anchors — what 1, 3, and 5 mean for your program.

  • ✓Set a decision deadline — aim to release results within 24 hours of tryouts ending.

DURING & AFTER TRYOUTS

  • ✓Score each athlete immediately after each drill — not at the end of the session.
  • ✓Keep evaluators separated — don't let them talk scores until after all forms are complete.
  • ✓Collect all forms immediately — don't let scores leave the facility until tallied.
  • ✓Average scores across evaluators, sort by total, flag any outlier scores for review.

REAL RESULTS

What clubs say about Waresport tryouts

We used to spend two weeks after tryouts tallying paper forms, sending individual emails, and dealing with parent calls. With Waresport, our post-tryout admin was done the same evening. Every athlete got a notification within an hour of us finalizing the roster.

TLThe Lab Basketball Club · Florida

Our evaluators used to argue about scores after the fact because everyone was working from memory. Now we score live in Waresport and the data is locked the moment each evaluator submits. No debates, no appeals — just clean data.

VAVero Elite Volleyball Academy · FL

The parent communication alone is worth it. When every family gets a clear, professional notification — not a vague email two weeks later — the whole experience of not making the team is easier to handle. We've had almost zero complaints since switching.

FAQ

Tryout evaluation form questions

A tryout evaluation form is a structured scoring sheet that coaches use to rate each athlete on specific skills and attributes during tryouts. It standardizes the process so every athlete is evaluated on the same criteria, making cut decisions easier to justify and less subject to bias.
